Switch 2 Edition or upgrade pack? Don't pay twice by accident
Nintendo's editions, upgrade packs and physical copies aren't interchangeable. Here's what to check.
The words 'Nintendo Switch 2 Edition' can make it sound as though every game needs to be purchased again. Nintendo's own guide says an eligible Switch 2 Edition combines the original game with an upgrade pack—but the details and price depend on the title.
Already own the original game?
For participating titles, Nintendo says existing physical or digital Switch owners can buy an upgrade pack rather than buying the complete Switch 2 Edition again. You still need to own the original game. If your original copy is on a cartridge, you'll generally need that original copy to play its upgraded content.
Not every game has the same upgrades
Official descriptions say upgrade packs can add visual improvements, features or modes, but the actual enhancements vary by game. Don't assume every edition has 4K graphics, 60 fps, new areas or free upgrades without reading the game's own listing.
Why the Australian digital price might differ
Nintendo announced that, beginning in May 2026 with new Switch 2-exclusive Nintendo-published games, physical and digital editions can have different suggested retail prices. Retailers set their own prices. A digital copy isn't automatically cheaper—or more expensive—than a physical cartridge.
Before you buy
- Check your current game and edition under the same Nintendo Account.
- Confirm whether your game supports an upgrade pack and whether the particular pack requires a paid purchase.
- Check the Nintendo eShop and local retailers like EB Games and JB Hi-Fi for the exact same edition, not a deluxe bundle versus a standard download.
- Read about transfer, compatibility and storage requirements before getting rid of the original system or cartridge.
Nintendo also documents some upgrade packs included for eligible Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members who own the base game. Membership doesn't replace base-game ownership; the exact titles and terms matter.
