EB Games vs JB Hi-Fi vs digital stores: how to compare prices properly
Skip the misleading 'cheapest' lists. Compare exact editions, postage, deposits, subscriptions and actual stock.
Australian retailers sometimes advertise different prices for a game or console, but the lowest-looking number isn't always the lowest total cost. Edition, platform, shipping, trade-in terms and the age of the listing can change the comparison completely.
Start with the exact same product
Compare the platform, model, storage size, disc/cartridge type, base edition, DLC, pre-order bonus and whether the listing is a digital download, code-in-box or full physical release. A special edition and a standard edition aren't equivalent even if the artwork is similar.
Price, deposit and final cost are different numbers
EB Games' Switch 2 preorder listings show prices alongside separate deposits; a deposit is not the full purchase price. JB Hi-Fi lists some online-only items with additional delivery charges. Use the total checkout amount rather than comparing a deposit with a full price.
Trade-in deals require extra care
EB Games' own terms say trade-value quotes can change daily and depend on the item's condition and the customer's EB World status; the final value is assessed in store. Don't subtract the maximum advertised trade credit from a retail price unless your own trade has actually been accepted at that value.
What about digital prices?
Steam, Epic Games, Nintendo eShop, PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store run separate promotions with their own regional prices and account requirements. A title included in Game Pass or PlayStation Plus isn't necessarily owned outright, and a digital discount may depend on having an active subscription.
